Uses of NRI birth certificate in foreign countries - How can NRIs apply for birth certificate

A birth certificate may appear to be a piece of decorative paper that belongs in a scrapbook. This piece of paper, which is given to you at the time of your birth, contains personal information such as your parents' complete names and social security numbers. It also includes your name, date of birth, and place of birth.

"You don't know what you've had until it's gone," says the adage, and the same can be said of birth certificates. You may not understand how important this document is until the very last moment when you require it. Here are five situations in which your birth certificate is essential:

  • Obtaining a Driver's License- When applying for a driver's licence, most states ask you to produce a birth certificate to confirm your identification. A driver's licence is usually used as a primary form of identification.

  • Replacing a Social Security Card- You will most likely be requested to present a copy of your birth certificate if you need a new copy of your social security card. Before issuing a new card, the Social Security Administration must verify your identity, which requires a birth certificate and one additional piece of identification, such as a driver's licence.

  • Getting Married- In certain states, you will be required to establish your identity to obtain a marriage certificate. Because a marriage licence is a legal document, you will be required to provide your birth certificate to prove your identity.

  • Registering for School- To register for school in most countries overseas, you must submit your birth certificate. This confirms that you are who you claim to be and that you are in the correct class, depending on your age.

  • Travelling Abroad- If you want to travel outside of the nation, you will need to bring your original – or certified – a copy of your birth certificate. Why? This is because a birth certificate is one of the documents necessary to apply for a passport, which you would need for foreign travel. It might take a while to get a passport, so make sure you have your birth certificate well in advance.

According to Section 4(1) of the Citizenship Act of 1955, the birth of every child born abroad must be registered with the Consulate within one year of the child's birth date. Once the kid is registered as an Indian citizen, they are eligible for a passport or any other benefits provided to Indian citizens.

Furthermore, Section 3 of the Citizenship Rules, 2009 states that a person may submit an application for registration of birth of their minor child born outside India by sub-section (1) of Section 4 in Form-I to the Indian Consulate in the country where such child was born, along with a declaration that such child does not hold the Passport of any other Country.

To get Indian citizenship for a child born in a foreign country to an Indian parent(s), the kid's birth must be recorded at the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate. The parents must, after that (or simultaneously) apply for an Indian passport for the child. Please contact the Indian Embassy/Consulate in your jurisdiction or visit their website for additional information.

What should you do if you don't have a birth certificate?

As a result, neither the PSA nor the local civil registrar can provide you with a record of your birth. In this scenario, you must complete a Late Registration of Birth form. Your birth records are in the local civil registrar's office, but they were lost for various reasons (e.g., fire, mismanagement, etc.).

If you are not registered in India, how can you obtain a birth certificate?

Being unregistered necessitates a legal procedure that must be carried through hierarchically. It all starts with a visit to the appropriate authority, such as the Municipal Corporation (MC), Gram Panchayat, or Para Medical office in the applicant's hometown.

Is it possible to obtain an Indian birth certificate online?

The Birth and Death Registration website may be used to get a birth certificate. To obtain a birth certificate, you will need documentation of your birth letter, your parents' birth certificates, and proof of your address. In India, a birth certificate is issued by the local Municipal Corporation.

Is it possible for a mission or post to certify a birth certificate issued by Indian authorities?

Yes, if the birth certificate issued by the competent authorities has been authenticated by the Home Department of the concerned State/Union Territory in India, and then by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Attestation Section in New Delhi or the MEA Branch Secretariats in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
