Osmania University is a public college in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Mir Osman Ali Khan, the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad, created and named the university in 1918. It is the third oldest university in southern India and the first to be established in the former Kingdom of Hyderabad. It was the first Indian institution to use Urdu as a language of teaching, although English was required as well. As of 2012, the institution has 3,700 international students from more than 80 countries.

For a long time, the need for a university in Hyderabad State was realised, and in 1917, Sir Akbar Hydari, in a statement to the Education Minister, highlighted the necessity to create a university using Urdu as the medium of instruction "since it is the language of the largest currency in India." Following independence and the accession of Hyderabad State in 1948, the institution came under the jurisdiction of the state government. English replaced Urdu as the language of teaching, and the Nizam's crown was also removed from the university seal.
