How it works

In the most primary cases, a reissue is initiated in case of an approaching expiry. It can be initiated within 6 months of expiry but not sooner. However, if your informationis updated, your passport is lost or destroyed, or you have run out of pages, you may request a reissue of your passport immediately.

A passport is reissued in the following cases:

  • Expired passport

  • Passport on the verge of expiration

  • Lost passport

  • Stolen passport

  • Exhaustion of pages in the current passport

  • Damaged passport

  • Soiled passport

  • Change in personal details in the passport (except for validity

Documents required to reissue a Foreign passport -

 

  • Copy of old passport

  • Self attested photocopy of ecr /non ecr page and page of validity of extension if any

  • Page of observation if any, made by the passport authority /no objection certificate / prior intimation letter

  • In case of a lost, stolen or damaged passport, you’ll need the original Police report, proof of birth, address proof

  • In case of a lost, stolen or damaged passport, you will need an affidavit stating how the passport was lost/ stolen/ damaged with a no objection certificate / prior intimation letter

The most important step for reissuing the passport would  be a police verification which initiates a confirmation of the applicant's Police Records from the system of the Consulate. In the absence of PVR status in the system, the case will be referred to the concerned authorities in India for clearance.

The police verification might not always go as expected, as it might go pending. In such a case the processing time can extend. The applicant however would be required to enter details such as address of the dedicated police station by indicating the police station’s area pincode and district details. In case of the missing details the application might get much delayed.

In case of filing for a minor’s reissue, the applicant needs to ensure that the application is being processed under the vigilance of an adult. There are differnt categories of a minor's passport filing which pertain to the number of days. It is restricted to five years or till they attain the age of 18, whichever is earlier. But the minors aged between 15 to 18 years can apply either for a 10-year validity passport or for a passport which is valid till they attain the age of 18 years. Different fees are applicable depending upon which category they are applying for.

Fresh police verification would take place if you apply for re-issue of passport after expiry of old passport more than three years ago. Processing time depends on the availability of a clear Police Verification report from Concerned Authority in India. Applicants should clearly indicate their Indian address with the correct Police station, district and phone number for smooth conduct of police  verification and clearance.

Time Required to complete the process

It takes 15 to 20 working days and The time limit depends upon the issued place and type of Documents. However, there are many ways to finish the process on a fast track.

What is the expense of foreign passport reissue?

The Foreign passport reissue cost depends on Embassy fees, so there is too much variation in expense, and embassy fees fluctuate. So it is tough to quote because charges change from time to time.
