Hi, Birth registration practices might have been different then. The best way to find out what you need to do is to contact the Chennai Corporation directly. They can give you the latest information on birth certificate procedures for births from 1958 and tell you if there were any specific requirements regarding parents' marital status at that time.
Don't get discouraged though! Even if your parents weren't married, there's a chance your birth was still registered. Try searching for records at hospitals where you might have been born. If your family practiced a religion with baptism certificates, those could also be helpful.
If you can't find a birth certificate but still need proof of birth for official purposes, there's another option. You can get sworn statements (affidavits) from two close relatives who can confirm the details of your birth and also you can get non availability of birth certificate.
